Giving thanks
May 11, 2010
Last week I had the pleasure of speaking at the Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif. It was the second time I had been there and like the first time the folks at the Register were absolutely terrific! The audience was great (they laughed in all the right places) but what really made it a most memorable evening was that my third grade teacher, Mrs. Mullen, was there. Mrs. Mullen (I can’t help but still call her that!) was the teacher who I credit with influencing me early on to pursue a career in art...and all she did was to speak a few kind words about some silly third grade art project I had created over 40 years ago. It’s truly remarkable how one person can make such a difference. Her few words of praise made quite an impression and most certainly influenced the direction my life took. Let’s face it, teachers don’t always get the respect they deserve, so it gave me great pleasure to thank her publicly for the positive influence she has had on my life. In fact, I’d like to thank her one more time...Thanks again, Mrs. Mullen! (Um, you can stop looking over my shoulder now...)
