A cartoonish look at life...

Maui Wowie!

Jan 16, 2011

Last summer my youngest son was asked to be (at the last minute) in a local production which involved my wife driving him daily for over a month to the little playhouse twenty miles north of us. By the time the production was over there was only a couple of weeks before school started and therefore my wife had no vacation. Now you might say what’s the big deal, lots of people don’t have vacations. That is true, except I did have a “guys” trip (great time up in Oregon as usual!)  earlier in the summer so let us say the little woman was not terribly happy about that. So in order to preserve a more perfect union (and to get me out of hot water!) I suggested that we take a trip just after the first of the year to Maui. There’s nothing like something to look forward to right after the holidays like a tropical vacation. What can I say about Maui that hasn’t already been said? If you were looking for paradise that would pretty much fit the stereotype. Palm trees gently swaying in the warm breeze, crystal blue water, an overall sense of being relaxed and everyone else being equally calm. Not a care in the world. Suffice to say I could get used to a lifestyle where wearing anything more than shorts and a t-shirt and thongs (the footwear, not the women’s undergarment) is considered dressing up. (Truth be told, that’s pretty much my daily attire except the thongs...I prefer sneakers at home). So my wife and two of my sons all had a blast swimming, snorkeling, hot tubbing, hiking and mopeding (I had no idea how well my wife can ride one of those things!) around the island.  All the activities were fun but the best part of all is that we were able to hang out together as a family like we used to do on family vacations when the kids were younger. (Instead of just seeing each other in passing like we usually do each day during our busy lives.) My oldest son even suggested we take vacations together more often so he must have had a good time. (...and he even paid for his own flight!) Now even with frequent flyer miles the trip wasn’t exactly cheap and to be honest I am not looking forward to receiving my next credit card statement but as they say in the MasterCard commercials, (paraphrased here) “Trip to paradise, a few thousand dollars....Spending precious, quality time with your family, priceless.”
