Rubes Cartoons - Tales from a Twisted Mind
The End is Accidentally Near
Jul 25, 2011
A few months ago I received an unpleasant message left on my voicemail. Apparently I had repeatedly committed the unpardonable sin of accidentally calling someone on my cell phone without my knowledge. The person calling me was understandably upset as it had happened (again without my knowledge) many times over the last year or more. All I could do was call (this time on purpose) and apologize. It was an embarrassing situation but one which has become so commonplace that the phenomena of accidentally calling someone has even received its own name:”a**-dialing” or a bit more mildly; “butt-dialing.” I am reasonably certain that those technological wizard-designers behind (pun intended) the cell phone had no idea that their handy little device would cause such a great deal of red-cheeked (sorry, couldn’t help myself) embarrassment. Fortunately the same folks that got us into this mess were able to get to the bottom (pun-intended) of the problem and invented the “keypad lock” to prevent more of the unintended calls. (Just another case of 20-20 hindsight). But the system is not perfect. You still have to remember to press the “lock” key. And what happens if you accidentally use your rump to unlock your phone’s keypad? (It’s bound to happen, right?) Just the other day I noticed that I had accidentally dialed another friend who somehow or another had gotten programmed into my speed dial whenever I inadvertently pressed the letter “P.” Fortunately she must have figured out what happened as (thankfully!) she did not call me back and leave an angry voicemail. Let’s face it, cell phones, despite all of the conveniences they offer can sometimes be a big pain. But we must accept the fact that they are here to stay, no ifs, ands and, uh, well, you know...
