A cartoonish look at life...
I like practical jokes. Why they are called “practical” I know not because in most cases there is nothing practical about them. One of my favorite practical jokes was when "I" sent a “Greetings from Hawaii” type postcard to a friend of mine. In reality I had given the postcard to a friend of my wife’s who was going to be in Hawaii and she mailed it to my friend in Oregon. My friend received the postcard and assumed, of course, that I was there on vacation never suspecting in fact that my wife and I had driven up from California to “surprise” him. His wife was in on the scheme the whole time and it was fun to see his expression when we showed up at his house unexpectedly. Of course sometimes surprises can backfire as it did the time I went to surprise the same friend only this time no one was in on the joke. I flew up to Oregon, took a train to Hood River and then attempted to hitchhike the rest of way to my friend’s house. The problem was I was never very good at hitchhiking. (My brother on the other hand hitched back and forth across the entire U.S.) A few cars pulled over and then as I approached, sped away laughing. So I was stuck lugging my broken suitcase (I had a belt tied around it to hold it together) uphill for over three miles during a very chilly Oregon winter evening. Oh, did I forget to mention that my friend and his wife passed me while I was doing the “great trudge of ‘76?” I yelled at them (and probably worse) to stop but to no avail. When I finally reached their home they were relaxing watching Saturday Night Live and were pretty surprised to see me. Then my friend tells me that after he passed me by he had said to his wife how he couldn’t believe how much the hitchhiker looked liked me. That time the practical joke was on me...probably because by lugging that suitcase I practically gave myself a hernia.
