“Squirrel-based farts are the WORST.”
That’s what scientists have to say about bobcat flatulence. A group of scientists have been busy compiling a Google Doc on which species of animals fart. Yes, really.
Why the interest? The scientists may just be appealing to their fan base. Dani Rabiotti of the Zoological Society of London told the Washington Post that “Does it fart?” is among the most frequent questions that kids ask zoologists.
If engagement is the goal, the scientists say the off-kilter project is a success, regardless of its maturity (or lack thereof). And it has a more serious side as well: “The diets and digestive systems of animals are an important and fascinating field of study, and gas is just a part of that,” according to biological anthropologist Adriana Lowe. Also, knowing more about farting cattle could lead to breakthroughs in limiting the atmospheric methane they produce.
Check out the Google Doc, which is up to 79 species and counting. The notes, especially, are quite entertaining. (Personal favorite: giraffes fart “at face height” of an adult human.)
