Bringing Style to the Field

Aug 03, 2011

If you are anything like me, and I’m sure a lot of you are, you are just dying for the fall seasons to start. And if you are even more like me and are living in a big city, then this craving for some hunting action is killing you just as much as it’s killing me. For the past couple of months I have been living in the Detroit, Michigan area interning for a company called Outdoor Hub. Even though my job revolves around the outdoors and agriculture I’m still in the city and I am itching to get out in the stand! With only a couple more months till opening day, I am in as much preparation for October 1st as anyone.

As I prepare for this fall there are some things changing around the Flory house. We have a newly planted food plot, Remington is in his prime awaiting some upland bird hunting, and I’m bringing some style into the field. Now, as much as I love wearing hand-me-downs from my dad, brother, uncles, friends, and anyone else who has worn out an item of clothing almost into dust and handed it down to me, I thought it was time to venture out of the big city and grab some good quality clothing. When my mom and grandparents were here visiting, I of course had to snag them and off we went to Bass Pro Shops. I really can’t explain how excited I was about this shopping trip, so I’ll let the picture tell the story.

So all in all, I was so excited I even had to try everything on in the hotel room. I finally won’t be weighed down by all that man gear! Girls, I’m sure all of you will agree, if they make something stylish for us to wear that is just as durable as the rest, WE WILL WEAR IT! Before this year, when I needed something new, it was always men’s because I didn’t know how reliable the ladies gear would be. Well I was wrong! Ladies gear is just as durable and can be found many places. So ladies- when you’re going out and buying new gear don’t just settle for men’s gear! There are many outfitters out there that only make women’s hunting clothing. Find yourself some nice clothing to wear and still bring the style to the field.

When part of the family comes to Detroit, we might as well drive around the lower peninsula to see Lake Huron and some of the crops in the prime of their season. We also had to stop in a little piece of Germany brought overseas to grab some cheese, fudge, and go to the largest Christmas store in the US. And I don’t think my mom would go anywhere if we couldn’t find a beach; I guess leave it to her to be a beach bum for just a little while!

What's Coming up Next with Outdoors on the Farm- Win a Free T-Shirt

Jun 15, 2011

I know that I’m a little ahead of the game but as upland and waterfowl bird seasons are approaching I’m getting even more excited to see what this season holds for all of you and for the Outdoors on the Farm staff. With there being all sorts of wildlife seasons opening in the fall there’s no better time than now to start preparing. Thomas has been improving his shot by participating on the Denver High School trap shooting team. They just finished up with the last shoot and are very happy with how well they did this year.

The Flory ranch’s food plot is well on its way and look for the follow up episode in season two to show where it has grown from episode 3 in season 1. Thomas has put in a lot of hard work to start building up a good wildlife management system on our property and we all encourage you to ask questions on what you should do on your piece of land. We only have a few acres for a food plot and that is more than enough to make an old horse pasture into a great place to build up our wildlife population. I know that because we are putting the time in now we are making it the best for the wildlife in our area to increase a healthy, mature population. In a couple of years or even this upcoming fall it is going to be a target spot for where I want to be sitting during bow season.

Season 2 Information
If you weren’t watching us before now is the time to start. In our upcoming season we are in new areas, managing new wildlife, and of course coming up with new ways for you to benefit from what we are doing. We are having a great time doing all of this but what we really want to show is what you want to see. Let us know! We are on Facebook and Twitter and are always encouraging your input.
A little competition!
Between my brother and me we are always competing for everything. We still argue about who tagged the largest doe last year but everyone knows mine was 5 pounds heavier (more like 20 pounds but I’ll give him some satisfaction). We want you guys to get in the fight too. Send us your best picture from any season last year and we’ll post it to our site, on our Facebook page, and our Twitter page. To get ahead even more send us a story to go with it (where the picture was taken, the season, the how and when). On August 1st my brother and I will pick the best picture and story line and the winner will get a free signed t-shirt from our Outdoors on the Farm apparel line. Submit your picture and story to our Facebook group page wall and we will be sure to get them out there! Go to:

Hey there Outdoors on the Farm fans!

Season 1 is done!
Join us on Facebook!

The past year has been one crazy time for the Flory family and for everyone involved in OOTF. Launching the first season has been a great accomplishment for all of us and also one fun time! Through all the traveling and cold days in the field, we appreciate all the support from all of our fans and OOTF wouldn't’t be possible without you. All our shows this season have hopefully taught everyone something about how they can maximize their habitat. The way that I understand it is we pretty much took a camera with us to film our time in the outdoors to share some "tricks" about habitat management and to show the non-farming community what farmers are doing to improve the environment. (Oh... and there's the "fun" we had, too!)

All of our shows feature simple, easy things that you as a landowner can do on your land at any time or even to help someone improve habitat on their land. As Dad said in his last blog- if you look for a way to do it, it can be done.

I unfortunately am locked up in a dorm room at Iowa State (I’m pretty good at exaggeration), but I am still finding ways to connect with the outdoors. Even if it means just taking a five minute drive in the evening to look for deer, I’m still keeping in touch with the outdoors and what I love. My tip for all of you is if you feel like there’s not enough time or energy to pursue your hobbies, take just 5, 10 minutes and get back into that ‘country mode,’ as I call it. It gets me out of the city life and makes me less stressed!

And for all of you keeping up with our site and what we have to say check us out on Facebook! Tom and I have made a group and that’s where anyone can upload pictures to the group and we’ll make sure to get them on the site and show off your country mode! Were planning on some huge stories for season two and we wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunities we’ll be having this year!

Hey guys, this show is just getting started and for you to be following us from the beginning means the world to us. I know all the hard work Dad is putting in for us to be able to do all of this and it’s all because of you all. We love helping you out and really want to make a difference in the way people think about their habitat.

And remember - Keep on havin' fun outdoors on your farm!

Get those kids outdoors!

Jan 14, 2011

Emily

Hey there Outdoors on the Farm fans!

Happy Birthday Mama!!

Growing up where I did in Iowa was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to see things that most people don’t get to see in a lifetime!. Many days I would wake up, sit up in bed, look out the window of my bedroom and see either a flock of turkeys in my backyard or some deer. This was an everyday happening for me and I know I am very fortunate for those moments.

Some people are not as fortunate for those experiences, but they can be! PARENTS: Get your little ones out in the outdoors! Take them on a drive out in the country and you will most likely see some wildlife. Get them experienced with the outdoors instead of sitting in front of a TV all day! Kids may see something on the TV, but it is not even close to actually seeing a group of 20 deer or that one big buck that makes your heart skip. These are great moments that you will never forget with your kids and it will teach them that there is so much more out in the outdoors that they can do -- even if you are “townies!” Start early with your young ones to open their eyes and expand their imagination!

My parents gave me the best lifestyle that I could ask for. I grew up riding horses and I always had a place to keep the horses and they took me on trips every weekend to horse shows. I had a wooded area for all the hunting that I wanted to do and also a great place to hang out with friends. So thank you Mama and Dad! You guys have given me the best of experiences and Outdoors on the Farm has even expanded those opportunities. Thanks to all the people who have made OOTF successful so far and all the supporters!

Also... Happy Birthday Mama! It was Sue Flory’s Birthday on January 13th and she doesn’t look a day over 20!

Get your kids in the outdoors!

And remember - Keep on havin' fun outdoors on your farm!

Beat the Winter Blahs!

Jan 14, 2011

Emily

Hey there Outdoors on the Farm fans!

You can beat the winter blahs!

As a hunter, I have a craving for being in the woods or the field or on the pond any time of the year. Sometimes that craving can be challenged with the way that Mother Nature lays out. It’s the middle of January now and as we all know, Iowa Januarys aren’t the most fun. The temperatures are low and usually it’s windy with blowing snow. Staying warm in this kind of weather is the most crucial for having fun outdoors on the farm. You need to be as prepared as you possibly can for whatever kind of weather that you might run into.

For me, the best way to deal with the weather is to wear LAYER after LAYER after LAYER! You can always take a layer of clothing off if you do need to, but usually I’ll wear over 4 layers of clothes! It’s the worst when a hunt or fishing trip is ruined because you can’t feel your legs or your hands. So layer up so you can keep having fun outdoors on the farm even in the coldest of weather!

Be sure to watch next week’s Outdoors on the Farm to see me and dad talking about how to stay comfortable when we’re outdoors.

And remember - Keep on havin' fun outdoors on your farm!
