Martinsdale, Mont.

We have a nice calving pen complete with a head squeeze. Even when the cow is caught in the head squeeze and crowded against the wall with the gate, she can kick. After getting kicked twice last year, I came up with a simple solution. Instead of using the standard big gate, I cut mine in half lengthwise and added one more hinge to each half of the gate. When catching the cow in the chute, a long pin secures the gate as a whole unit. Once she’s caught in the head squeeze, I can secure the gate to the wall with a couple of hooks. Then I can open the upper part to assist a cow when calving or the lower section to allow a calf to nurse.

Calving Pen Remodel

For $250 and 24 hours of fabrication time, Nathan Kleinsasser was able to modify the swinging gate of his calving pen in the hopes of preventing cows from kicking while he assists them during calving. Nathan oversees the cow-calf operation of the Martinsdale Colony, which consists of 500 head of cattle.

Hitch Holder

FJ 051 F14180
One day while hooking up to a feed bunk, I couldn’t find a hitch pin. To prevent that from happening again, I created a place to store hitch pins inside my truck bed. I attached a 24" long piece of 3"x3", 3⁄8"-thick stainless steel angle iron by drilling two holes in the side of the truck and attaching it using stainless steel bolts directly behind the driver’s side door. Next, I drilled four holes to hold the hitch pins snug. Now hitch pins are easily accessible for feed bunks, silage or hay wagons.

Combine Header Carrier

F14180c

Moving combine headers out of storage to repair or perform maintenance is costly if you have tostart up the combine. Instead, I made a simple jig that can carry a combine header using a forklift. I used leftover tubing from a trailer I disassembled for scrap. The jig is 3.5' wide x 3.5' high, and the tubing that the forks slip into is also 3.5' long. Make sure that you brace the jig for support. I also welded a 2" shaft on the front corner of the jig to keep the header from slipping off.
