Farmers Feeding the World Celebrates New Partnership at FFA Convention

October 23, 2011

Last week, Farmers Feeding the World celebrated the launch of FFA: Food For All with an exhibit at the 2011 National FFA Agricultural Career Show in Indianapolis.  This new grant program and partnership between the National FFA Organization and the Farm Journal Foundation, with matched funding from Howard G. Buffett Foundation, will award more than 130 chapters up to $2,500 each to fight hunger in their communities or around the globe.

FFA members were challenged to dream huge at the exhibit as they learned about the need for hunger relief, had an opportunity to learn more about the grant program, and were urged to find food security solutions. Thousands of students "raced against hunger" as they challenged their friends to pedal tractor races, "stomped out hunger" dancing to video games, and signed their names on a map of the U.S. that read, "Where are you going to fight hunger?"

When asked how they would use $2,500 to fight hunger, hundreds of students at the convention brainstormed hunger relief projects they could start in their local communities and more than 290 students shared those ideas on the Farmers Feeding the World Facebook page.

"It was a lot of fun to kick off the new grant program in such a memorable way," says Brian Harvey Hogue, Director of Operations for the Farm Journal Foundation. "It was truly remarkable to see the interest and passion FFA members had in learning about what they could do to fight hunger, there is no doubt these students will play a vital part in eradicating hunger both now and in the future."
In the mood of celebration Andy Weber, chairman of the Farm Journal Foundation, and Dwight Armstrong, CEO of the National FFA Organization, went head-to-head in a pedal tractor race. Find out who won after listening to these words from Armstrong about FFA’s excitement about the new program.

Grant applications are now available and you can learn more about FFA: Food for All at www.ffa.org/foodforall. All applications are due Dec. 15, 2011.
