Heifer International is a global nonprofit with a proven solution to ending hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. Heifer helps empower millions of families to lift themselves out of poverty and hunger to self-reliance. Heifer first teaches recipients how to raise and care for livestock, seeds or trees in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. Then the organization gives these living gifts to provide families a multiplying source of food and income. Once blessed with offspring, recipient families share their animals’ firstborn female offspring with others in their communities -- along with knowledge, resources and skills -- and in doing so creates an expanding network of hope, dignity and self-reliance that reaches around the globe.

This simple idea of giving families a source of food, opportunity and income rather than short-term relief -- a cow, not a cup -- caught on and has continued for more than 66 years. Today, millions of families have been given gifts that led to self-reliance and hope. Since its founding in 1944 by Indiana farmer Dan West, the organization has helped raise 62 million people and 12 million families in more than 125 countries out of hunger.
