Heifer International is a global nonprofit with a proven solution to ending hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. Heifer helps empower millions of families to lift themselves out of poverty and hunger to self-reliance. Heifer first teaches recipients how to raise and care for livestock, seeds or trees in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. Then the organization gives these living gifts to provide families a multiplying source of food and income. Once blessed with offspring, recipient families share their animals’ firstborn female offspring with others in their communities -- along with knowledge, resources and skills -- and in doing so creates an expanding network of hope, dignity and self-reliance that reaches around the globe.

This simple idea of giving families a source of food, opportunity and income rather than short-term relief -- a cow, not a cup -- caught on and has continued for more than 66 years. Today, millions of families have been given gifts that led to self-reliance and hope. Since its founding in 1944 by Indiana farmer Dan West, the organization has helped raise 62 million people and 12 million families in more than 125 countries out of hunger.

Farmers Feeding the World Supports Existing Hunger Charities

Farmers Feeding the World is committed to improving the capacity of existing organizations already on the ground where the need is greatest, and with a proven record of delivering hunger solutions.  Heifer International’s effectiveness, efficiency, methodology, and culture align especially well with our campaign’s mission.

The Farm Journal Foundation’s Board of Directors, with advice from an agribusiness Advisory Council, will allocate funds on a select basis to support the efforts of hunger organizations in the United States and abroad. Organizations will be held to standards of proven performance and fiscal responsibility. Leading organizations who qualify for our assistance include Feeding America, World Vision and others.

In 2011, we intend to use approximately two-thirds of our charity funds to support agricultural development organizations like Heifer International.  The remainder of our funds will primarily support hunger relief here in the United States.

Model:

Living gifts of animals which provide the “7Ms” -- meat, milk, muscle, manure, money, materials and motivation, -- along with seeds, trees and training, to hungry families. Once the family fills its nutritional needs, excess may be saved or sold for family income. The first female offspring from the animal is given to another family in need through Heifer's Cornerstone Passing on the Gift. Thus, the gift of a single animal multiplies to lift not only individual families, but entire communities out of hunger and towards self-sufficiency.
