Succession planning is very vital to keeping the family farm but often it is one of the hardest conversations for a family to have. We realize it is a hard conversation to start so the Legacy Project is dedicated to giving you the tools you need to start the process through workshops, newsletters and Leave a Legacy TV.
A Legacy Project workshop was held at the 2011 Ag Connect Expo in Atlanta, Ga. The 40 preregistered attendees were pruned down to near 20, due to the snow storm that hit Atlanta last night, making for a cozy seminar.
Succession planning expert, Kevin Spafford, began the workshop explaining how important succession is to the future of agriculture and gave the group some insight to the process, the do’s and don’ts, and the topics that are vital to include in discussion. Workshop attendees also received workbooks containing all of the information to take home and begin the succession planning process.
Legacy Project workshops are extremely interactive. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, concerns and share stories from their own experiences. Most families share the same struggles so this open communication is helpful. “Let’s be honest. We all have dysfunction, there may be varying degrees of it, but we all have it,” Spafford said encouraging participants to willingly share their experiences.
