November 15, 2008
By: Sara Schafer, Farm Journal Media Business and Crops Editor

The following information is a Web Extra from the pages of Farm Journal. It corresponds with the article "Size Up Your Soil,” Route 5 in the Corn Navigator series, by Darrell Smith. You can find the article on page 22 in the Mid-November 2008 issue.

Analyze your soil's capacity with these two tools.

As this graph shows, the texture of a soil determines how far water will move upward from the water table. Water may rise 2' in a clay loam soil, but only 6” to 8” in a sand.
