SHAWANO, Wis. — Genex Cooperative, Inc., now offers members and customers a new tool for determining the right mix of conventional and sexed semen to meet individual herd goals. The new tool, Calf Math, is a simple spreadsheet which allows producers to test how different semen usage strategies will affect their herd before a semen purchase is made.
To utilize Calf Math, a producer enters herd-specific data (number of cows, number of heifers, annual cull rate) as well as the annual growth goal for the herd. The growth goal can vary depending on whether the producer plans to maintain herd size or expand. From this information, Calf Math calculates the number of heifers needed annually to achieve the herd growth goal.
Then, the producer enters different semen usage scenarios. The scenarios may include one or more semen products. The producer can enter various usage percentages for conventional dairy semen, dairy GenChoice 90, dairy GenChoice 75, conventional beef semen and beef GenChoice 75 male semen. Calf Math calculates the number of heifers yielded from each semen usage scenario and compares this quantity to the quantity of heifers needed to achieve the farm's goals.
"Calf Math is a very basic tool that will aid many dairy producers in making educated semen purchase decisions,” states Doug Wilson, Genex chief operating officer. "In addition, this tool may open producers' minds to new methods of increasing the profits made from each calf produced on the farm. Producers may consider options such as increasing female selection intensity, improving the quality of replacements used for internal herd growth or utilizing male-sorted beef semen to produce quality crossbred steers that could be sold at a premium price.”
