What weeds should you be scouting for in your state? The Farm Journal Pulse provides some insight.

"A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows."
--  Doug Larson

This quote rings true for many farmers who have had to fight some vicious weeds in the past few years.

Weed pressure has started evolving, even expanding. Some weeds are prevalent in only certain areas of the country, while others seem to be everywhere.

More than 1,500 farmers and ranchers shared their primary tractor brand in last week’s Farm Journal Pulse. The question was: What is your most significant weed problem?

Waterhemp tops the list with 30% of respondents saying it was a problem. Marestail/horseweed was a close second with 22% of the votes. Ragweed was also picked out as a major weed, with 16% of the votes.

Here are the full results:

  • Palmer amaranth: 11%
  • Waterhemp: 30%
  • Ragweed species: 16%
  • Marestail/horseweed: 22%
  • Grasses: 9%
  • Other: 12%
