TODAY ON AGDAY

JANUARY 1, 2014

USB SPECIAL

TOUR:

GOOD MORNING I'M TYNE MORGAN. AS DYNAMIC WORLD MARKETS CAN SHIFT U-S GRAIN AND OILSEED FUTURES ON ANY GIVEN DAY, MORE ATTENTION IS ON NEW AND GROWING MARKETS. AND TODAY WE'LL GET A GLOBAL VIEW OF THE POWER OF THE U-S BEAN IN THIS SPECIAL EDITION OF AGDAY.

PANAMA CANAL:

THE PANAMA CANAL IS AN IMPOARTANT GLOBAL SHIPPING ARTERY. THE CANAL SERVES OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT IS VITAL TO THE U-S, AS THREE OUT OF EVER TEN BUSHELS OF GRAIN AND SOYBEAN EXPORTS GOES THROUGH THAT CANAL.  IT'S THE LINK BETWEEN THE CARRIBEAN AND PACIFIC OCEANS, SAVING VESSELS TIME AND MONEY BY ALLOWING THEM TO CUT THROUGH, VERSUS GOING AROUND THE CONTINENT. AND FOR MIKE STEENHOOK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE SOY TRANSPORTATION COALITION, THAT CANAL IS THE STANDARD TO WHICH HE HOLDS ALL U-S LOCKS, DAMS AND PORTS.

COLOMBIA FTA:

ONE MAJOR ROLE OF UNITED STATES SOYBEAN EXPORT COUNCIL IS TO HELP CREATE RELATIONSHIPS TO STRENGTHEN INTERNATIONAL TRADE.  AN AGREEMENETS RECENTLY PUT INTO PLACE IS THE US-COLOMBIA TRADE PROMOTION AGREEMENT, MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE COLOMBIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT. WHILE IT WAS SIGNED IN 2006, IT DIDN'T GO INTO EFFECT UNTIL MAY 2012. UNDER THE AGREEMENT, MORE THAN 80 PERCENT OF U-S EXPORTS, INCLUDING AGRICULTURAL GOODS, ARE DUTY FREE.

BOGATA:

JUST BEFORE THE BREAK, YOU SAW HOW IMPORTANT THE COLOMBIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT IS TO BOTH U-S FARMERS, AND COLOMBIA LEADERS. THERE'S A GROWING NEED BECAUSE OF THE BOOMING POPULATION IN THE COUNTRY'S MAJOR CITIES. BOGATA IS ONE CITY THAT'S APPETITE IS IMPROVING AS INCOMES INCREASE.

IN THE COUNTRY:

THROUGHOUT THE 1970S AND 1980S, MEDELLIN, THE SECOND LARGEST CITY IN COLOMBIA, BECAME KNOWNS FOR ITS DRUG CARTEL. FINALLY, IN 1993, THE GOVERNMENT WAS ABLE TO DISMANTLE THE POWERFUL CARTEL. THE PERCEPTION OF THE CRIME AND DANGER STILL LINGERS.  BUT THE COUNTRY ROADS OUTSIDE OF MEDELLIN ARE HOME TO SOME OF THE AREA'S BEST KEPT SECRETS -- A TRUE OASIS TO COLOMBIAN RESIDENTS TIRED OF CITY LIFE.

COLOMBIA FOOD KITCHEN:

WHILE THE WAY OF LIFE IS IMPROVING FOR SOME IN COLOMBIA, THERE ARE STILL MANY WHO ARE FOOD INSECURE. THAT'S WHY THE UNITED STATE SOYBEAN EXPORT COUNCIL IS HELPING IN A UNIQUE WAY, AS THEY SAW SOYBEANS AS AN ANSWER TO A DESPERATE NEED.

SFY SIGNUP:

THAT PROJECT IS ALSO CONNECTED WITH THE UNIVERISTY OF ILLINOIS, WHO HELPS TEST THE PRODUCTS FOR SAFETY AND QUALITY. AS YOU CAN TELL, IT WAS NOT ONLY AN INFORMATIVE TRIP, BUT AN ENJOYABLE ONE. AGAIN, OUR THANKS TO THE UNITED SOYBEAN BOARD, AND SPECIFICALLY THE SEE FOR YOURSELF PROGRAM FOR INVITING US ALONG. IF YOU'RE A YOUNG FARMER AND ARE INTERSTED IN ATTENDING THE 2014 PROGRAM, GOOD NEWS, SIGNUPS HAVE ALREADY STARTED. JUST GO TO UNITED SOYBEAN DOT ORG, BACKSLASH SEE-FOR-YOURSELF.
