TODAY ON AGDAY

JANUARY 8, 2014

POLAR COLD:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. AREAS OF THE COUNTRY SOCKED WITH RECORD-SETTING COLD TEMPERATURES ARE HOPING FOR A SLIGHT REBOUND TODAY TOWARDS NORMAL.

TAMING MOTHER NATURE:

TODAY WE CONTINUE OUR TAMING MOTHER NATURE SERIES. LAST YEAR IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE EMOTIONS FARMERS EXPERIENCE DURING TRYING YEARS. TODAY, NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN SHOWS US THE TOOLS FARMERS USE TO MITIGATE THE WEATHER EXTREMES.
CROP WATCH:

LET'S CHECK IN NOW WITH CINDI CLAWSON. SHE HAS OUR FIRST LOOK AT FARM COUNTRY WEATHER.

SMITHFIELD FOODS:

THE WORLD'S LARGEST PORK PRODUCER IS ASKING THAT ITS CONTRACT GROWERS JOIN THE COMPANYS' EFFORTS TO PHASE OUT THE USE OF GESTATION STALLS. SMITHFIELD FOODS ANNOUNCED IN 2007 THAT ITS COMPANY-OWNED FARMS WOULD CONVERT TO GROUP HOUSING FOR PREGNANT SOWS. NOW IT'S RECOMMENDING CONTRACT GROWERS DO THE SAME THING. SMITHFIELD SAYS IT WANT CONTRACTORS TO CONVERT WITHIN TEN YEARS. FOR THOSE WHO DO, SMITHFIELD WILL OFFER CONTRACT EXTENSIONS. FOR THOSE FARMERS WHO DON'T, SMITHFIELD SAYS EXTENSIONS ARE LESS LIKELY.

WISCONSIN TAIL DOCKING:

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES IS CALLING ON WISCONSIN FARM BUREAU TO BE PROACTIVE IN STOPPING WHAT THEY SAY IS A INHUMANE PRACTICE. HSUS WROTE A LETTER TO THE WISCONSIN LEADERS URGING THEM TO BAN THE PRACTICE OF DOCKING TAILS ON DAIRY CATTLE. THE SOCIETY SAYS THE COUNTRY'S LARGEST DAIRY PRODUCING STATE, CALIFORNIA, HAS ALREADY BANNED THE PRACTICE. WISCONSIN FARM BUREAU RESPONDED, SAYING "THIS SHOULD REMAIN A DECISION BETWEEN FARMERS AND THEIR VETERINARIANS, AND NOT BE A LEGISLATIVE MANDATE PROMPTED BY AN ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP WHOSE END GOAL IS TO ELIMINATE ANIMAL AGRICULTURE."

ANALYSIS:

THE COLD WEATHER HAS LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON HERDS ESPECIALLY FOR CATTLEMEN. IN TODAY'S MARKET THAT'S NOT JUST AN ANIMAL WELFARE DECISION BUT A FINANCIAL ONE. AS FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL DISCUSSES, AMERICA'S CATTLE HERDS ARE WORTH MORE NOW THAN THEY HAVE BEEN IN YEARS...AND THAT'S EQUITY THEY CAN USE.

HOSPITAL FOOD:

IF HOSPITAL FOODS MAKES YOUR STOMACH TURN, YOU'RE NOT ALONE. BUT NOW, HOSPITALS ARE TRYING TO ADOPT MORE HEALHTIER CUISE, AND GOING LOCAL TO DO SO.  CARRIE ANTLFINGER {ANTLE-FINGER} WITH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS INTRODUCES US TO ONE WISCONSIN HOSITAL JOINING THE FARM TO TABLE MOVEMENT IN HOPES IT CATCHES ON.

SUPER SIZING HEALTHY FOODS:

A DESIRE TO EAT HEALTHIER IS AT THE TOP OF MANY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014.
WELL RESEARCHERS AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY SAY THAT WHEN IT COMES TO EATING HEALTHIER, CONSUMERS STILL FAVOR A GOOD DEAL.

FRUITS PROJECT:

AND EATING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES MAY HELP IMPROVE LUNG FUNCTION.
