TODAY ON AGDAY

MAY 19, 2014

PLANTING PROGRESS:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. LAST MONDAY'S CROP PROGRESS REPORT SHOWED BIG STRIDES IN GETTING THE CROP PLANTED.  BUT MANY TRACTORS WERE ON THE SIDELINES THIS PAST WEEK DUE TO THE COLD AND RAIN.

CATTLE ON FEED:

WITH SPRING CALVING WRAPPING UP, ATTENTION TURNS TO GROWING THOSE CALVES. FRIDAY THE USDA RELEASED ITS LATEST CATTLE ON FEED REPORT.

WALSTEN RANCHLAND:

JUST LAST YEAR RECORD HIGH CROPLAND PRICES WERE THE BUZZ. BUT AS THOSE INCOMES BACK OFF, SO HAVE THOSE LAND VALUES. AND NOW THE ROLES HAVE REVERSED AND RANCHLAND VALUES ARE CLIMBING HIGHER.

MEAT PRICES:

IT MAY BE A SLOW START TO GRILLING SEASON BUT MEAT PRICES CONTINUE TO RACE HIGHER. THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATICS SAYS MEAT PRICE CLIMBED ALMOST 3 PERCENT IN APRIL. THAT'S THE MOST SINCE NOVEMBER OF 2003--AND THE SECOND BIGGEST SPIKE IN 34 YEARS. AS CRAIG GEAUTREUX OF THE LSU AGCENTER REPORTS, SHOPPERS NOTICE.

CROP WATCH:

WE MENTIONED EARLIER THAT MOTHER NATURE PUT MANY FARMERS ON THE SIDELINES LAST WEEK.  MIKE HOFFMAN HAS MORE IN CROPWATCH. MIKE.

PLANTING:

IN AGRIBUSINESS...IT WAS A TOUGH WEEK IN THE GRAIN MARKETS. NEW CROP CORN PRICES ARE NOW AT THEIR LOWEST PRICE IN TWO MONTHS. WILL THEY CONTINUE DOWN OR WILL A SLOW DOWN IN PLANTING RALLY PRICES BACK HIGER? FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL ASKS THE QUESTION IN THIS MORNING'S ANALYSIS.

MACHINERY PETE:

IN THIS MACHINERY PETE MONDAYS, GREG PETERSON MIXES UP THIS WEEK'S AUCTION FINDS WITH SOME OLD TREASURES.

ROSES:

MANY OF YOU JUST GOT DONE COVERING UP YOUR BELOVED ROSE BUSHES THIS PAST WEEK TO PROTECT FROM THE LATE FROST.  BUT FOR ONE MAN IN THE LONE-STAR STATE, IT'D BE HARD TO COVER ALL OF HIS UP. THE TEXAS STATE FLOWER IS THE BLUEBONNET BUT IN AN EAST TEXAS TOWN ROSES ARE KING.  ED WOLFF WITH THE TEXAS FARM BUREAU HAS MORE.

A1 NAME CHANGE:

IN FOOD AND YOUR FAMILY, THEY SAY A GOOD STEAK DOESN'T NEED STEAK SAUCE. WELL, NOW KRAFT FOODS IS SAYING STEAK SAUCE DOESN'T NEED STEAK.

KIDS CEREAL:

AND NEW RESEARCH SHOWS FEEDING YOUR CHILDREN SUGAR-PACKED CEREALS FOR BREAKFAST IS ALMOST THE SAME AS GIVING THEM COOKIES.
