TODAY ON AGDAY

MAY 8, 2013

FLORIDA CITRUS:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. THE WORLD'S LARGEST SOFTDRINK MAKER ANNOUNCES A MAJOR INVESTMENT INTO FLORIDA'S AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY.

I-80 TOUR:

THE LATEST USDA CROP PROGRESS REPORT SHOWS 7 PERCENT OF OHIO'S CORN CROP IS IN THE GROUND. THAT'S FIVE POINTS BEHIND THE NATIONAL NUMBER, BUT 34 PERCENTAGE POINTS BEHIND THE AVERAGE PACE. AS NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN TELLS US ON HER I-80 TOUR STOP, FARMERS IN NORTHWEST OHIO COULD BE LEADING PROGRESS IN THE STATE, AS CONDITIONS IMPROVE.

CROP WATCH:

ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE COUNTRY, FIELDWORK IS SLOWLY GETTING DONE. A WACKY SPRING ISN'T JUST MESSING WITH YOUR WARDROBE.  IT'S ALSO IMPACTING INSECTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.  MIKE HOFFMAN HAS THE DETAILS IN THIS MORNING'S CROP WATCH.

DAIRY COW CULLING:

USDA'S ANNUAL LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTER REPORT SHOWS NATIONWIDE, THE NUMBER DAIRY COWS HEADED FOR THE RAIL WERE UP MORE THAN 6 PERCENT LAST YEAR. CULLING THROUGH REGION 6 OR NEW MEXICO, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, ARKANSAS AND LOUISIANA SAW A 63 PERCENT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF DAIRY COWS SENT TO SLAUGHTER.

WEST EXPLOSION:

INVESTIGATORS IN THE SMALL TEXAS TOWN OF WEST ARE INCHING CLOSER TO THE CAUSE OF LAST MONTH'S DEADLY EXPLOSION. SO FAR IT APPEARS THE ANSWER IS IN TWO PARTS.

FARM BILL:

IT LOOKS LIKE THE 2012 FARM BILL IS GETTING SET TO BE THE 2013 FARM BILL. BOTH CHAMBERS IN WASHINGTON ARE POISED TO START WORK ON A NEW FEDERAL AGRICULTURAL FRAMEWORK NEXT WEEK.

DOW RECORD:

IN AGRIBUSINESS TODAY, IT WAS ANOTHER STRONG DAY ON WALL STREET.

ANALYSIS:

MARKETS ARE THE ONLY THING AFFECTED BY THE WEATHER. AS AL PELL FOUND OUT IN THIS MORNING'S ANALYSIS, IF THE WEATHER EVER COOPERATES, AMERICA'S SEED COMPANIES ARE POISED TO HELP FARMERS GROW THEIR BUSHELS.

FARM KID PHOTOS:

THANKS MIKE. OUR PARTNERS AT AGWEB ARE TRYING TO MAKE A MEMORABLE MOTHERS DAY FOR SOME LUCKY MOMS. AGWEB LAUNCHED A CUTE-KID PHOTO CONTEST ON THE FARM JOURNAL FACEBOOK PAGE.  RIGHT NOW THEY HAVE ABOUT 160 FARM KID PHOTOS, MOST WITH CAPTIONS. AGWEB WOULD LIKE FOLKS TO HOP ONLINE AND VOTE FOR THEIR FAVORITE. VOTING ENDS FIVE OCLOCK CENTRAL TIME THIS FRIDAY. THE WINNING PHOTO WILL BE PUBLISHED IN AN UPCOMING EDITION OF FARM JOURNAL MAGAZINE.

PRAIRIE BISTRO:

GREENHOUSES ARE GETTING BUSY WITH GREEN-THUMBERS LOOKING FOR FLATS OF FLOWERS TO SPRUCE-UP THEIR GARDENS. BUT DOES YOUR FAVORITE GREENHOUSE OFFER A MEAL? IN NORTH DAKOTA, THE PRAIRIE BISTRO IS FOLLOWING A EUROPEAN TREND WHERE DINERS CAN EAT LUNCH SURROUNDED BY HUNDREDS OF PLANTS AND FLOWERS. CLIFF NAYLOR FROM AGDAY AFFILIATE KFYR GIVES US A TASTE OF NURSERY NOURISHMENT.

NUTRITION AND LEARNING:

IN FOOD AND YOUR FAMILY THIS MORNING, THERE'S NEW SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE PROVING MOM WAS RIGHT. USING M-R-I SCANS, RESEARCHERS HAVE LOOKED AT THE BRAINS OF STUDENTS AND FOUND PLACES LIKE SCHOOL CAFETERIAS AND PLAYGROUND MAY BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS TIME IN THE CLASSROOM. CLARK POWEL HAS THE STORY IN THIS REPORT FROM THE AMERICAN DAIRY ASSOCIATION. DOCTORS SAY IN ADDITION TO SKIPPING BREAKFAST, THE STUDY FOUND 3 OUT OF 4 TEENAGERS AREN'T GETTING THE RECOMMENDED 60 MINUTES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY EVERY DAY.
