Want to bulk up those corn ears before harvest? If you’re going to variable rate your planting and nitrogen application, carefully consider your N rate, your plant density and whether to use a flex or fixed hybrid.
"In our past studies here in central Illinois, we’ve seen a trend to that as well, meaning the flex hybrids are a little bit more sensitive to making sure you’ve got enough nitrogen on it when you raise the population," Farm Journal field agronomist Ken Ferrie says in Episode 3 of Corn College TV Season 3. "So it’s not just as simple as raising the population in the field."
