Marrone Bio Innovations Inc. (MBI), a provider of bio-based pest management and plant health products, has submitted MBI-302, a biological nematicide, for registration with Environmental Protection Agency. The product uses a patent-pending species of bacteria, Flavobacterium sp. strain H492, found in MBI’s discovery screen for suppression of nematodes. Field trials in 2013 show that applied as a seed treatment, MBI-302 reduced soybean cyst nematode numbers and enhanced yields. MBI is developing the product as a seed treatment and as a liquid. Tackle Above-Ground Pests
Mycogen Seeds will feature PowerCore, a new trait technology, in its corn hybrid lineup for the 2015 growing season. PowerCore combines three Bt proteins—Cry1A105, Cry2Ab2 and Cry1F—for protection against above-ground insects. The new trait combination effectively controls European corn borer, southwestern corn borer, corn earworm, fall armyworm and black cutworm. Multiple modes of action mean that PowerCore will require only a 5% refuge in the Corn Belt. Mycogen Seeds also plans to offer the technology in its Refuge Advanced single-bag packaging solution that contains the required refuge seed for the Corn Belt in the same bag. For more information about PowerCore, visit www.mycogen.com.
The key active ingredient in FBSciences Inc.’s technology platform, Complex Polymeric Polyhydroxy Acids (CPPA), has been granted Environmental Protection Agency registration for use as a plant growth regulator (PGR). CPPA is a broad-spectrum PGR for use on field and greenhouse crops. The patented technology represents a novel chemistry that serves as a versatile product development platform to improve germination and seedling development, stimulate root and shoot growth, and improve the plants’ ability to withstand stress. By improving plant health throughout the season, CPPA optimizes crop yield potential. "Efficiency-improving and stress management products like CPPA are expected to grow in market share by 15% to 20% in the next five years to meet the emerging challenges to food production," says David Duncan, CEO at FBSciences. The first commercially available product using CPPA, designed for use as a seed treatment, could be launched as early as 2014. For more details, visit www.fbsciences.com.
New Pre-Mix Fungicide
Custodia, a premix fungicide for use on corn, soybeans and wheat, is available from MANA for use
in 2014. The premix combines two complementary fungicide active ingredients, azoxystrobin and tebuconazole, to deliver both preventive and curative disease control. The simultaneous movement of the active ingredients within the plant knocks down diseases and provides a residual barrier that inhibits diseases from developing. The multiple active ingredients in Custodia allow farmers to minimize the number of products they need to control various diseases. The premix is also labeled for several rotational crops for flexibility in disease control strategies. "It prevents or controls gray leaf spot and anthracnose on corn, cercospora and Septoria on soybeans, and rusts and powdery mildew in wheat," says Matt Bradley, product brand leader. In corn, the fungicide optimizes grain fill by preventing stress during periods of non-optimal photosynthesis. It also prevents extended stalk greening in soybeans.
