Roots provide the foundation in the field for higher yields. Farm Journal Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer explains how these roots are the lifeline of the corn plant in episode 8 of Corn College TV.
“Head out with a shovel and dig up plants to see what’s going on,” Bauer says. “Clean up the rootball and get the extra soil off. Trim off the brace roots. They anchor soil, but they aren’t the yielding power or capability of the plant.”
To identify the crown roots, look and find the old seed.
“Snap that off. And at the base, the crown roots start there,” Bauer explains. “They increase in diameter as the plant grows. And the first, second and third crown roots are the yielding power of the plant.”
She says that those are the roots that supply most of the nutrients and water to the plant
