Dairy Cow Culling Continues

October 26, 2012
By: Jim Dickrell, Dairy Today Editor

The United States Department of Agriculture reported this morning that dairy cow culling continues ahead of year earlier numbers. In September, 251,000 dairy cows were processed through federally inspected slaughter plants, up 4,000 head (up 1.6%) over a year ago.

Year-to-date, culling is running 6% over last year, with 131,000 more cows moving to slaughter through September.

At first glance, it appears that month-over-month numbers are down, with 24,000 fewer cows being slaughter in September than in August of this year. But that’s deceiving, since there were 23 working days in August compared to 19 in September. On a daily basis, 13,210 cows were slaughtered in September compared to 11,956 in August. That’s a 10% increase in daily slaughter activity.
