Editor's Notebook: Roller Coasters Aren't for Everyone

100 Ideas charlene profileYou know when you get in line to ride a roller coaster that you’re in for twists and turns and stomach-dropping ups and downs. The ride is either exhilarating or a white-knuckle experience, but either way, you knew it was coming long before you buckled the safety harness. Some folks exit the roller coaster ready to race back into line and others leave shaky and grateful to be on solid ground. Most of us know our reaction before we ever get on the ride—but we’re ready.

Farm Journal Economist Bob Utterback promises that the commodity markets won’t be much different in the years ahead. He and many other trusted experts virtually guarantee that the breathtaking market volatility we’ve been experiencing will continue. The spikes and dives deliver tremendous opportunity and risk. It can be gut-wrenching, but, if you farm, you have no choice but to take the ride.

That’s why Farm Journal and our sister brands Top Producer, AgWeb and "AgDay" TV have launched a new series called "Ready for the Ride." The coverage will provide insights and tools to help you buckle up and be ready. Mother Nature certainly plays a leading role, but, beyond the weather, there are many steps you can take to prepare and to leverage your odds for success. The stakes are too high not to be ready.

If there are specific marketing, agronomic or risk management topics you’d like us to cover in the months ahead, shoot me an e-mail. I’d also love to hear how you’re preparing for the ride.
