The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado can be outfitted with the right combination of technology and power for the farm. An updated cab where comfort is key rounds out the package.  
 
 

A farm truck has to step up and deliver, day in and day out.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado strives to build on the strength of its legacy while focusing on the demands of the farm.

"The truck is even better suited than before for the way people get their work done, especially on the farm," says Tom Wilkinson, communications manager for Chevrolet Trucks. "We concentrated on how to make the truck a better, more comfortable, more productive place to spend your day."

The comfort and mechanical controls have been repositioned and enlarged so they can be easily engaged while wearing gloves.


Drivers and passengers alike will notice less wind noise at highway speeds; more comfortable, durable seats; more storage, more places to charge a phone and a computer; and a larger display screen for the MyLink system.

Comfort and convenience aside, the truck was built to work.

"We paid a lot of attention to making sure all of the controls, like the trailer brake control and the two- and four-wheel-drive switch were positioned where you could see them," Wilkinson says.

The Trailer Sway Control system works with Stabiltrak by sensing trailer sway and intervening with braking and/or reduced engine power to bring the trailer under control. Another optional feature is the trailer brake controller, which is adjusted via the driver information center.

"Together, many of the smaller features add up to more confidence in using the truck for pulling a trailer or hauling a load," Wilkinson says.

Engine performance. Among the improvements are three new Eco Tec3 engines—one V6 and two V8s. The V6 has the most torque and highest towing rating of any standard V6. Both claim to be more fuel efficient. The 6.2-liter V8 is tagged as rugged but luxurious for the high-end pickup user. Both V8 engines can be paired with the Max trailer­ing package for up to 11,500 lb. of conventional towing.

Safety matters. "Silverado and Sierra set a benchmark for safety with features designed to protect passengers before, during and after a collision," says Gay Kent, GM’s general director of vehicle safety and crash­worthiness. The safety features, many of which are optional, include:

  • Rear Vision Camera with Dynamic Guidelines allows the driver, when in reverse, to view objects directly behind the vehicle using a screen in the center of the dash.
  • Forward Collision Alert informs the driver when the truck is closing in on a vehicle too quickly, giving more time to react and avoid a crash.
  • Lane Departure Warning alerts the driver when the truck drifts over a lane line when going at least 35 mph.
