The past year was a lesson in extremes, according to Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie.
"We saw some record high yields, but we also saw some record low yields," he says. "And that was on the same farm—which is really unique."
Ferrie recommends that even though farmers can’t control the weather, they can strengthen their understanding of growth and development to know the stage of their crops when they are undergoing stress.
"If farmers can know how stress deducts from yield potential, then they can better manage their crop in response to the uncontrollable factor of the weather," he says.
