Kansas wheat farmer Paul Penner has been elected as the new president for the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG). Penner and other NAWG officers were installed at the group’s annual meeting held during Commodity Classic in San Antonio in late February.

The Hillsboro, Kan., farmer has held multiple positions at the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, including serving as the association’s president. He is also a graduate of the wheat industry’s two leadership training programs, the Wheat Industry Leaders of Tomorrow and the Wheat Organization Leaders of the Future.

Penner owns and manages a grain farm and serves as treasurer of Risely Township. Along with wheat, he grows soybeans, grain sorghum, corn and grass hay. He also operates a custom farming enterprise.

Despite the change in leadership, Penner says NAWG priorities will remain consistent.

"Now that the farm bill is passed, we’re charged with the task of getting the implementation to go smoothly," he says. Another priority will be pushing for regulations that are "reasonable but do not create a burden for farmers," he adds.
