Investments in irrigation boomed in South Dakota in 2013 when the state issued more than 350 permits. Roughly 40% of the new permits came from five southeastern counties that were severely affected by the 2012 drought. Now that the drought has nearly ended in the state, and with corn prices lower than in the past few years, officials say about 100 irrigation permits are expected to be granted this year.
