It's still early, but corn fields so far are looking rough

The 2012 Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour is officially off and rolling, but it's still too early to make any yield predictions yet. However, what the scouts have seen so far doesn't look great.

Eastern Tour

Brian Grete, Pro Farmer senior market analyst and Eastern Tour leader, says scouts on his route are finding some variability in Ohio fields.

"We've seen some fields as we're sampling here that aren't so hot, and we're seeing some fields that aren't too bad," Grete says.

Western Tour

Meanwhile, Pro Farmer Editor Chip Flory says corn fields in southeast South Dakota are looking rough, but this came as no surprise.

"It is living up to the expectations, or maybe I should say, living down to the expectations here," Flory says. "It is not a good situation here."

Soybeans might pull through, Flory adds, but the crop will need rain soon.
