Wheat farmers braved adverse weather conditions today to travel to Wichita, Kan. for a day of crop education. Farm Journal Field Agronomist Missy Bauer and high-yield wheat consultant and wheat college attendeesFarm Journal columnist Phil Needham led training at the first 2011 Farm Journal Wheat College.

Despite the freezing temperatures and winter storm warnings, more than 60 farmers made their way to the Wichita Hilton today. “Only 13 farmers cancelled their registration and 14 farmers registered on site,” Bauer says.

The agenda includes growth and development tips, stand evaluation training and lessons about nitrogen application including timing, rates, forms and nitrogen stabilizers. Farmers will also learn about scouting insects and diseases affecting wheat and the procedures to spot them.
