The Future of Farming

The 2014 Tomorrow’s Top Producer Conference, which was held Jan. 28 in downtown Chicago, Ill., opened with a staggering statistic: Records show that 40% of farms are poised to transition to the next generation this year. This number makes learning business, marketing and financial management of utmost importance to our early-career farmers, explains Jeanne Bernick, Top Producer editor and conference co-host.

Hungry for the latest information and tools, more than 150 young farmers representing 18 states from California to New York came together to hear from leading industry experts and enhance their knowledge.

During the conference, Jeremy Weaver of Needham, Ind., was recognized as the 2014 Horizon Award winner. The award recognizes a farmer, age 35 and younger, who demonstrates excellence in the business of farming.

Weaver, only 33, has been farming for nearly 20 years and been raising, selling and picking sweet corn under the Weaver’s Produce brand. Read more about Weaver here.

The links that follow highlight just a few of the conference sessions, speakers and key takeaways.
