Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA is well aware of the unusually extreme weather facing producers and has been working diligently to provide assistance to those in affected areas.
Just this year 913 counties across the country have been declared disaster areas. As of today, the Risk Management Agency (RMA) has paid $693 million in crop insurance, $114 million to livestock producers, $30 million in emergency loans, and several hundred producers have been given a one year extension of FSA payments as part of the disaster relief program. Producers in 25 states have received a total of $27 million to assist them in debris removal.
Also, in the past two years, $2.6 billion has been paid to producers in the form of SURE payments. Secretary Vilsack promises the safety net won’t stop there.
