How to Evaluate Soil Shatter Results
Soil Density Management Improves Corn Root Growth
In-Field Tillage Demonstrations
A foundation to higher yields is uniform soil density. Achieving even shatter between shanks sets the stage for a smooth-running planter pass, even emergence, and successful season.
At the 2011 Corn College in Illinois Ken Ferrie is taking farmers to the field to show them how depth plays a role in properly setting tillage. A 7-shank in-line ripper and a hybrid coulter chisel were run too shallow and accurately set.
Watch the videos below to learn more:
When set properly, the in-line ripper evenly picks up and drops the soil—instead of disrupting large chunks of soil on top.
When set properly, the hybrid coulter chisel provides for even shatter between the shanks. However, when run too shallow, the tool leaves columns of soil undisturbed.
