Wheat College Focuses On High-Yield Practices

February 16, 2013

When you implement even small, incremental management practices well, they can multiply and add up to greater yields at harvest, according to Phil Needham, high-yield wheat expert.

"Fairly small things like fine-tuning our seeding and nitrogen rates can make significant contributions to crop success," says Needham, who works with wheat growers throughout the United States and Canada.

Needham will share his management strategies and agronomic expertise with farmers during two Farm Journal Wheat College events this winter.  Dates and locations include:

The 2013 Wheat College topics, which are tailored to the geographic area of each meeting, include: growth and development; stand evaluation and plant health; nitrogen application and the keys for timing and rates; and disease and insect scouting procedures.

"At Wheat College, I’ll be providing farmers with practical information and know-how that they can take directly to the field to create higher yields," Needham says.

Along with the high-level wheat content, grower participants will have the opportunity to gain bonus corn agronomic information from corn expert Missy Bauer, Farm Journal associate field agronomist.

This is the third year Farm Journal has offered Wheat College programming and the supplemental corn agronomic training. The event was developed in response to farmer requests for management information and production tools.
