The Great Iowa Tractor Ride

I knew something was going on in Waterloo yesterday when traffic was stopped and a string of vintage tractors passed by. Then I figured it out…

Today concludes the 13th annual Great Iowa Tractor Ride organized by WHO Radio. It’s a three day event that stretches across 70 miles. The parade includes more than 450 tractors, and the riders tough it out through 90 degree temperatures and rain atop many vintage tractors without cabs or air-conditioning.

Here's video of one rider as he waves to his family from a John Deere 435 Detriot Diesel. This video was taken as a group was leaving the Bremer County Fairgrounds.

Tin Anniversary for CNH

This month, Case IH and New Holland's parent company, CNH celebrates its tenth anniversary.

CNH formed with the the merger of Case IH and Ford New Holland. Other legacy companies include Sperry, Versatile, Flexicoil, Steiger, International Harvester and Tyler.

Illini Take Top Honor at ¼-scale Competition

The Illini Pullers brought home the biggest prize from the 12th annual ASABE ¼-scale tractor student design competition. The rest of the top five teams were, in descending order: Kansas State University, Purdue University, Iowa State University, and Texas A&M.

Each of the 24 student teams designed, built, and demonstrated a utility or recreational pulling tractor. A panel of industry experts judged for innovation, maneuverability, sound level, serviceability, ergonomics, safety and manufacturability, and teams then demonstrated performance in a multi-stage tractor pull using a progressive sled.

Submissions included a range of configurations including from one to five engines, driving belts, chains, continuously-variable transmissions, and hydraulics, and two and four-wheel drive tractors.

A strong group of ag industry companies and organizations support the contest with their sponsorship. These include: AGCO, Bridgestone/Firestone, Briggs & Stratton, Case, Caterpillar, Deere & Company, Kubota, New Holland, and SolidWorks. Additional support is provided by Campbell Scientific, Inc., Central City Scale, Claas Omaha, igus Inc., Kelly Sauder Rupiper Equipment, Kentucky Corn Growers Association, MacDon

Industries, Miller Electric Manufacturing, Star Equipment and Sukup Manufacturing.

Win a Year’s Use of a Versatile 375 4WD

When Versatile brought back their heritage brand this past year, they reiterated the new tractors were modeled after their simple to operate, easy to maintain reliable tractor template.

Now it’s your turn to get behind the wheel of a Versatile 375. The Simple and True Challenge will present a year lease to the winning farmer. The contest requires entrants to verbalize in a couple of paragraphs what it means to them, their family and their farm to have a tractor that is simple, reliable and easy to maintain.

The grand prize winner and runners up (who can win packages including an all-weather jacket, a backpack and a special edition woven cap) will be announced at the 2009 Farm Progress Show. Entries must be submitted by August 23.

Your Personal Best: Woodworking Contest

Every other year Wood-Mizer hosts their Personal Best contest. Up for grabs are $20,000 in Wood-Mizer prize credits across six categories.

The contest is open to all Wood-Mizer sawmill owners who have completed a project they are especially proud of. Entries can be something you completed for yourself or for someone else and can range from barns to cabins to creative undertakings.

It’s All How You See It

In John Deere's second season of skid steer competitions, the newest episode on the Skid Steer Smackdown Web site is all about visibility.

The competing contractors tested rear-view visibility across five brands of machines. The skid steer was put in reverse, moving closer to a line drawn in the stadium’s dirt. Operators had to stop when they could no longer see the line while looking over their shoulder–stretching and leaning back out of the operator’s seat was not allowed.

Firestone Takes It Tread to Tread

When the tires underneath your horsepower are top of mind, there is a new information site that might be of interest.

Firestone organized side-by-side tractor tire traction demonstrations with the Firestone 23° R-1 and the Michelin Agribib 45° R-1W. The results are available here: www.treadtotread.com

The two tractors ran in the same field, at the same time, pulling the same load. At the end of one run, the tractors exchanged rear tires and then ran again. Switching around the tires was their way of assuring that the demo results rode solely on the performance of the tires and not on a difference between the two tractors.
