Nothing to Yolk About

Aug 30, 2010

Half a billion eggs recalled? That’s a whole lotta omelets! If I was a chicken I’d be pretty upset knowing that all my work was for not. Now all those birds are going to have to put eggstra hours to make up for the millions of dirty dozens. No doubt the unhappy hens will demand overtime. Who can blame them? After all, many will have to cancel their vacation plans and instead of just relaxing in the sun lying they’ll have to be at work laying.

The One That Didn't Get Away

Aug 21, 2010

A couple of days ago my son, lured (pun intended), by his coworkers went ocean fishing. Now this wasn’t the first time he has gone fishing. A few weeks ago he landed a bat ray. Pretty cool looking and lucky for the ray it slipped off the hook and fell back in the water. I’m sure by that evening it was telling all its buddies (all named “Ray”) at the bar about how it was “the one that got away.” Anyway, this time the fish he hooked wasn’t so lucky. It was a copper fish (sans whistle and badge) which he proudly brought home after his friends did all the cleaning, etc. In case I haven’t mentioned this before, my wife, the vegetarian, has not had much experience cooking fish but she did an admirable job of preparing it and I must admit it was quite tasty. My son was all grins each time one of us would comment on how flavorful it was he and proudly stated several times how he caught it. The funny thing was that with each telling of the story the fish kept getting bigger. By the end of dinner the fish probably tripled in size. Man, no wonder I was so full!

Home Schooling

Aug 14, 2010

My wife, a school teacher by profession, homeschooled our kids from elementary school all the way through high school, the exception is that our youngest, now fifteen, who is going to the local high school. (Guess after twenty years she needed a break!)  One of the disadvantages (at least from the kid’s point of view) of home schooling, besides having me for a principal (yes,it’s true!) is that the kids, unlike their friends who attended public school, could never fake being sick in order to get out of going go to school. Good thing they didn’t try...

Happy Hour

Aug 02, 2010

I was feeling a bit Grumpy, so in order to improve my mood I headed down to the local watering hole. It was karaoke night and after a few beers I had a good buzz going and before long I was belting out tunes at the top of my lungs and acting anything but Bashful. I might have overdone it, because in an hour or two I was feeling pretty Dopey. I stumbled outside into the alley and went to Sleepy. The next morning I woke up hung over and with the chills, so I went to my Doc and he gave me something to stop me from being so Sneezy. All in all, after a night of overindulgence, I felt pretty miserable. I wish I could tell you this story had a fairy-tale finish, but in the end it was anything but Happy.
Leigh's cartoony show comes to San Gabriel ,Calif., on Aug. 10. Come join the fun! For details, see: http://www.rubescartoons.com/events.html
