The Model C was Deere’s first shot as a general purpose row-crop tractor.

However, in that day and age, telephone clarity was a joke; dealers fretted that an order for a Model C might be misconstrued as an order for a Model D. Deere’s decision, name its new tractor the GP (general purpose) and avoid the confusion created by a bad phone connection. The GP had the same basic design as the Model D, but was intended for row-crop use, thus the high-arched front axle. Introduced in 1928, its 3-row design was unpopular, so a year later it was supplemented with a tricycle 2 and 4 row tractor. Price: $800. Weight on steel wheels: 3,600 lb. Many farmers converted to rubber tires, ditching steel wheels, welding on new rims.

He bought it from Bernard Scott, who acquired it from a Michigan man. “Engine was overhauled; otherwise it was a basket case,” Tom says. Ray Mersgergen, Rusty Plow Restorations, Ft. White, Florida, reassembled it, and it was first shown at the February 2009 Florida Flywheelers.
