What’s This? A Dazzling Purple Oliver
Dec 05, 2012
On the March page of this year’s Classic Farm Tractors Calendar, there’s a purple (or is it lavender? Check it out here /) 19966 Oliver 1850 hooked to an Oliver Model 565 Plow, explaining that a few Olivers (normally painted Meadow Green) were painted purple that year to get farmers’ attention at ag shows – to introduce the new Oliver high-speed plows.
It was a great promotional idea that sold a slew of plows – reinforcing Oliver’s fine reputation for plow-making.
The Oliver sales team had used color in another promotion 30 year earlier. At regional farm fairs, Oliver displayed new tractors painted different colors and farmers were asked to vote for the color they liked best. Meadow Green won the color contest.
At one of those farm shows in Pennsylvania, William Cover purchased the 1937 Oliver 70 tractor used in the color contest – it was painted red.
His grandson restored that tractor and it appeared in the 2000 Classic Farm Tractors Calendar, along with the granddad and grandson.
Now fast forward to today…. The spectacular dark purple Oliver above belongs to Lisa and Mark Meinders of Leighton, Iowa. It’s an attention-getter at tractor shows, parades and tractor rides.
It’s possible this Oliver is better known than the Morgan’s 1850 on the March page because the Meinders have taken it on the WHO Radio’s Great Iowa Tractor Ride a 170-mile drive through the Iowa countryside several times.
Mark completely overhauled the gas engine, including a new crankshaft. Then he pained it purple for Lisa. It’s her tractor.
Another Oliver to note, is this original 1958 Oliver Super 88, owned by Mike Kalsem, Huxley, Iowa. He and his father, Dave Kalsem, are avid Oliver enthusiasts with collections of Oliver tractors machinery and memorabilia. It was cold and snow when this picture was taken. This was the December page of the 2008 Classic Farm Tractors Calendar.
These tractors are featured in the 2013 Classic Farm Tractors Calendar. A companion DVD is also available which runs 80 minutes and features all of the tractors and their owners. To order the calendar and/or DVD, call 800-888-8979 or go to www.classictractors.com
