How do you use Twitter? Do you use it to promote your farm or to update friends about your life? Maybe you use it to promote your brand?
I recently read an article in Fast Company magazine
about the power of Twitter to drive viewership to TV programs and other events. The article written by Ellen McGirt, titled Twitter TV, suggested that Twitter is single handedly blazing the trail to change the way we watch television. Because viewers can “interact” with the stars on the show as well as other people watching the show, it adds a kind of exclusive and intimate feeling for viewers. Couldn’t you apply this principle to other public events like college games, rodeos and other non-televised events?
I think so.
A perfect example is the awards banquet for the Jesse H. Neal Awards that happened yesterday in New York City. Farm Journal Media was nominated for awards in three categories. Of course we couldn’t take our entire staff to the event, but several of our editors were in attendance. While the Twitter presence started off slowly, as the announcement of the awards began to happen more and more people were Tweeting from the event. I was super excited, both because I was trying to relay timely “live” information to our readership and also because I was baffled at the lack of Tweets in the beginning of the event. My thoughts, “this is a media event, come on people Tweet some more!”
Our editors Tweeted some pictures and sent some updates and it turns out we knew in our office that the Farm Journal Legacy Project had won the 2011 Grand Neal
before our editors could Tweet it as they walked on stage. This was my first experience of the true POWER of Twitter. We were able to announce winning the award to our social audiences before our editors who were in the room as we won could reach us by SMS message to spill the exciting news!
This is the power of Twitter… Masses of people can have information in their hands in a matter of seconds. Our office, roughly 1000 miles away from the banquet and the rest of the Twittersphere, felt “In The Know” during our proud moment.
