Wheat Rallies, Soybeans Sell-Off Hard, Extended Hours Starting Sunday

May 18, 2012

This afternoon Cody and Logan discuss the huge move in the wheat market in detail, and look at some production estimates out from Planalytics.

In response to "significant feedback" from producers, ranchers, commercial traders, and end-users, the CME group has scrapped plans to go to a 22 hour trade day. Their new plan to remain competitive with the ICE exchange's CBOT based contracts is a 21 hour trade day with a market close between 2:00PM and 5:00PM CST.

(full text of the announcement here)

For producers that want direct market access to CBOT grain futures when a traditional broker might not be available, it might be time to start looking at electronic trading platforms. At Grain Hedge we a have a great one, and many producers are starting to make the switch so they can place hedges and follow the markets - whenever the markets are open.

USDA Projects Record Yield for 2012/13 Corn at 166 bu. per Acre

May 10, 2012

Big Things to Take Away From This Morning's WASDE:

12/13 corn production projected at a record 14.8 billion bushels

12/13 corn yield projected at a record 166 bushels per acre

11/12 corn ending stocks raised 50 million bushels to 851 million bushels

12/13 soybean production projected at 3.205 billion bushels as "higher yields more than offset lower harvested acreage"

As we approach the market open we see the bid on new crop corn at 476 3/4. Bid on new crop beans sitting at 1403 1/2. It looks like we will continue to see soybeans build a premium with respect to corn as this report will weigh heavily on the corn market. Want to watch these markets trade and execute your own orders, even during the night session? Take a demo of our trading platform today!

New Crop Soybeans Lead Grains

May 01, 2012

At the time of this post November soybeans are the only grain trading in the black, up 8 1/4 in the early going. We saw some export sales reported to China this morning by the Foreign Ag Service, and that looks to be supporting the soy complex this morning as soybeans scramble to pick up planted acreage this spring. Also supportive for the soybean complex was Oil World raising their expectations for US exports to China during June, July, and August. Following production issues in South America, Oil World now expects the Chinese to import 2.3 Million tonnes of US Soybeans during this time period -- compared to just 0.6 million tonnes during June, July, and August of 2011. Tune in for the full breakdown of these stories plus yesterday's Crop Progress Report!
