65% of Corn Crop Rated Good, Excellent

June 25, 2013

A farmer from east-central Iowa provided this photo to AgWeb’s Crop Comments. "Don't get me wrong, not every field looks good to excellent, but we are doing a lot better than most," he reports.

See this week’s round of crop condition ratings for corn, as well as soybeans and cotton.

As hard as it may be to believe, this year’s corn crop is in better condition than last year’s crop. USDA reported on June 23 that 65% of the corn crop is rated good or excellent, which compares to 56% with that rating in 2012.

In Pennsylvania, nearly 90% of the crop is in good to excellent condition. The Ohio and Kentucky corn crop s are also looking good, with more than 80% of their crops receiving the top two condition ratings.

On the flip side, 60% or less of the corn crop in these states has good or excellent ratings: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Colorado.

AgWeb’s Crop Comments seem to correlate with USDA’s recent report.

A Wells County, Ind., farmer reports that crops have never looked better. "With over an 1 inch of rain last night and 90 degrees we will be tasseling by the 4th of July."

In Nobles County, Minn., a farmer asks: So, rain makes grain? "We lost a lot of acres last Saturday morning. USDA is so much in denial about these crops. I wish the traders and USDA would tour Iowa and Wisconsin. I guess those states don't count this year."

For soybeans, USDA estimates 92% of the crop is planted and 81% emerged. For this week, 65% of the crop is rated good or excellent, which compares to 53% last year.

Cotton may be the crop in the most trouble. As of this week, 35% of the U.S. crop is rated good and only 8% excellent. Last year, 50% of the crop received those ratings.
