The beautiful weather in many parts of the country has let farmers get a jump-start on working ground and spreading fertilizer.
In Lawrence County, Ark., a farmer reports to
AgWeb Crop Comments: During the last two weeks, everyone has been working ground, moving dirt and putting out pre-fertilizer like it was the 1st of April.
A farmer from Johnson County, Ind., also reports seeing lots of applications. "Anhydrous and dry fertilizer applications, along with early pre-emergence spraying and seed bed prep, going strong."
So, when farmers are fertilizing their fields, what type of nitrogen source are they using?
According to this week’s Farm Journal Pulse, a text message poll of farmers and ranchers, anhydrous ammonia, NH3, is supplying around one-third of the nitrogen need for crop production.
More than 1,400 farmers replied to the question: What is your primary source of nitrogen?
NH3 received the most votes by far, while UAN32 and UAN 28 were about equal in use. Less than 20% of respondents replied they use a combination of nitrogen sources.
