In episode 7 of Corn College TV, Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie answers the following question, “With so many corn hybrids to choose from, how can I be sure I’m buying the traits that will have the best payback?”

He says to focus on knowing what pest problems you have or could experience in a crop season. Ferrie compares over purchasing traits to buying hurricane insurance in central Illinois.

Ferrie says, “As traits are stacked, you have to be sure you’re buying the trait to fix a problem you have. Think about how important is that trait to you and your operation. Ask yourself if you should manage that problem in another way.”
