Focus on your combine header and groundspeed to keep crop loss to a minimum
If your soybean crop is comprised of unusually short plants this season as a result of the 2012 drought, take some extra precautions as you harvest, recommends Missy Bauer, Farm Journal associate field agronomist.
"Short beans are difficult to rake into the head, and they’re often podded lower to the ground, which makes them vulnerable to loss," Bauer says.
Yield losses can mount quickly. Just four soybean seeds on every square foot of ground across an acre will add up to a 1-bu.-per-acre loss, she adds.
