Before harvest this year, farmers should develop a plan, Farm Journal associate field agronomist Missy Bauer says in Episode 13 of Corn College TV Season 3. To begin, determine which fields to visit first, including those where corn is lodging or ears are dropping.

Once the combine is operating, keep your eyes peeled for grain loss.

"Probably the No. 1 thing we need to watch for is harvest loss," Bauer says. "So we’re going to be looking for header loss, in other words, how much am I shelling at the head itself, as well as we want to pay attention to what comes out in the back of the combine."

Remember that two kernels within a square foot—and one ear within 10 square feet—equate to one bushel of grain.
