In episode 12 of Corn College TV, Farm Journal Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer discusses the importance of a calibrate yield monitor. Junk in, junk out. That’s what to expect unless the time is taken to set your yield monitor properly.
“A good calibration equals high accuracy,” Bauer explains. “A map from a calibrated yield monitor will display spatial variability in a field and will show patterns because it’s well-defined.”
Bauer explains a poor calibration will show a blur of colors. To the scales it could be accurate, which is frustrating.
“A good yield map can be used as a tool for your operation,” Bauer says. “You can overlay soil type maps and there should be patterns visible. This will help designate your management zones.”
