Picking the right plant population is key to maximizing yields. In Episode 4 of Corn College TV Season 3, Farm Journal’s Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer discusses in-field examples of two hybrids.

"Don’t just assume that every hybrid should be planted at the same population. Certain populations allow for more opportunity," she says.

Bauer shows in Episode 4 how field tests can reveal the strategy behind higher yields. By planting test plots of different hybrids, farmers can find a best fit hybrid for each soil type and variable rate. "Not only is population important within the hybrid, but also as we start to think about variable rate across these fields."

"Pay attention to the hybrid and get it matched up with what it can handle based on its characteristics. If you’re not set up for variable rate, it would be something to really look for as an opportunity to increase profitability and yields."

Watch as Bauer discusses the results of her test plots and determines the highest yielding variable rate in Episode 4 below. Click here to register for 2013 Corn College events happening throughout the summer.
