Demand for irrigation in Minnesota is racing ahead, according to reports on Minnesota Public Radio. As of early September, the state had received nearly 470 applications from farmers for irrigation permits, which is more than double the number of applications that were requested in 2012. Of those permit requests, more than half came from a seven-county area located in the central portion of the state.
The Minnesota legislature has moved to speed up the required analysis of groundwater amid concerns about available water supply, and it also tweaked how the state’s natural resources department manages permits.
