What are the most valuable hyrbid plots? In episode 12 of Corn College TV, Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie says there are two types: showcase plots and the plot the farmer needs—which will show how hyrbids respond to your practices.

“If you are putting out a hybrid plot, it needs to match your fertility practices, tillage practices, and overall crop management,” Ferrie says. “Also, it needs to match your nitrogen application timing, and practices with fungicide application.”
When the management practices used in the plot match your own, the most will be learned about how a hybrid will perform.
Another tip from Ferrie is for the plot’s placement.
“Try to select ground that represents a large percentage of your acreages,” he says. “It’ll mean a lot more when you select your hybrids.”
