Harvesting corn in waves is a great way to keep your crop out of trouble, Farm Journal field agronomist Ken Ferrie says in Episode 13 of Corn College TV Season 3.

Begin by answering these questions, Ferrie says: "How much grain can I process per day going through the harvest mode, and how much corn do I want to have ready at a time?"

Getting the wave effect can be achieved by carefully scheduling planting dates and hybrid maturities so flowering occurs at different times, depending on the field.

"By being able to set it up in waves, you’ve got anywhere from a week to two weeks between stages, and that makes a big difference," he says.
