Big Baler Journey

Mar 25, 2011

One recent road trip took Niklas Beindorf on a six-month adventure across the western U.S., demonstrating the harvesting power of a JCB Fastrac and Krone Big Pack baler.

Our friends at profi detailed the Road Show in a DVD. You may have read in a recent Farm Journal that you can enter to win a free copy of the DVD.

Krone and profi are extending a special offer to Farm Journal readers. The companies are giving away DVDs of "10,000 Miles Across the USA" to the first 1,000 farmers to write in for a free copy. To receive the DVD, write to: Krone North America, 3363 Miac Cove, Memphis, TN 38118; or e-mail Don’t forget to include your address.

Beindorf’s trip began down south at the Mexican border. From there, he tracked up the West Coast to Oregon, crossed Utah, speared through Colorado and finished deep in the heartland of Kansas. Though the majority of people would go on such a trip by car or camper van, Beindorf went by JCB Fastrac 8250 and Krone Big Pack 1290 baler.

You can read more about the journey in the Road Show Blog.

Miller Electric’s 75th Anniversary Chopper

Mar 21, 2011

There was one guarantee upon attending Miller’s Welding University–the three grand-prize winning farmers and I were going to take home valuable welding tips and tricks. However, it was a pleasant surprise that as soon as we walked in the front entrance of the company’s headquarters in Appleton, Wisc., we were greeted with their 75th anniversary custom chopper designed and built by the Teutuls (Paul Sr. and Paul Jr.) of Orange County Choppers. This is the father-son team most recognized for their Discover Channel cable TV show, American Chopper.

web DSC 9146The motorcycle was built in 2004. The Miller products used in the fabrication include two Millermatic 251 all-in-one MIG welders, two Dynasty 200 DX AC/DC, TIG/Stick inverters, a Spectrum 375 plasma cutter and several Big Window Elite auto-darkening welding helmets in the patriotic stars and stripes design. The bike features a Miller Big Window Elite helmet morphing out of the gas tank, a Diamondback TIG torch mounted in the frame, a Roughneck MIG gun that forms a mirror and a tow-behind XMT 304 multiprocess inverter ready to go to work.
Upon completion, the bike was delivered to Appleton, where it was received by thousands of Miller employees and their families for the unveiling.

Spring Planting Season on Its Way

Mar 09, 2011

Even though winter is keeping its tight grip on most of the Corn Belt right now, bursts of spring have already given most of a hint of what’s on its way. Speaking someone in the Delta just this morning, planting season has officially kicked off and will creep north as the weather and conditions clear up.

This video from John Deere is just one example of farmers gathering to figure out how to increase the efficiency of their planter pass, take yields to a higher level, and tips from the field on how to achieve their efficiency goals.
Some planter manufacturers have added to their websites to provide information pertinent to planting season 2011. Here are a few examples:
