Answer to Last Month’s Machinery Mystery

Aug 19, 2011

It was the last week of July (the week between Corn College in Illinois and Soybean and Corn Colleges in Michigan) and I was heading north to Iowa for a media day. On the other side of the highway, I saw machinery I didn’t recognize as it was loaded on the trailer. So I turned to this blog to get an answer. (you can see the original blog post here)

To all of you who sent me an email, thank you! This question was quickly answered, and there were many suggestions of why I didn’t recognize the John Deere 7760 module-building cotton picker, which is built in Des Moines, Iowa.

·         Some told me to get out of the Corn Belt more (probably true)
·         One Corn College Alumni suggested (probably correctly) that I had gotten too much sun the week before at the week-long event series.
I had never seen a 7760 dis-assembled in that configuration. And I want to say the series number started as 44***. Thus, my confusion.
Then, I found this picture and it all made sense.
The farmer with the first correct answer was David Hajda from Taylor, Texas. He’ll be receiving a John Deere hat for his speedy response.
